Support for Branford Police Department is showing in downtown Branford with blue ribbons adorning Main Street's flower baskets.

On Monday, July 18, a group of Branford Police Department members, including Police Chief Kevin Halloran, met on the town green with members of Branford Garden Club (BGC) to kick off the effort, with the placing of a symbolic blue ribbon. Branford resident and noted local photographer Bill O'Brien was there to capture the scene.

Blue ribbons decorate all of the planters enhancing downtown's vintage-style cast iron lantern poles on both sides of Main Street. The garden club decorates downtown in four seasons as part of BCG's continuing mission to beautify Branford.

Garden Club members wanted to display the ribbons as a show of support for the police. Other shows of support for police during the past weeks have included members of the community bringing gifts to Branford Police Department on Harrison Avenue, as reported here    Community support for police in many shoreline towns has become more noticeable since the shooting deaths of five Dallas TX police officers on duty during a peaceful protest on July 7 and continuing unrest leading to more police deaths in other parts of the country.

Since the blue ribbons began appearing on Main Street, similar blue ribbons have been showing up to show support; but are not attributed to the Garden Club program. Ribbons, generally folded in two and affixed, have been spotted on storefront windows, dangling from residents' mailboxes, on traffic signs and even the park marquee sign at Bayview Park in Stony Creek.
