An East Haven man with a celebrated high school sports career has died following an early morning car crash.

State police say 19-year-old Michael Deangelo, a Western Connecticut State University student, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Deangelo’s car veered off Interstate 95 in Old Lyme and crashed into a sound barrier around 1 a.m. today.

No other vehicles were involved. The crash remains under investigation.

Deangelo was a 2015 East Haven High School graduate who captained East Haven’s football, basketball, and baseball teams as a senior and played first base for the East Haven Senior American Legion 89ers.

He was a freshman at Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) and member of the school’s baseball team.

WCSU spokesman Paul Steinmetz says the university plans to make counseling services available to students.
