Bringing the bright lights and action of television to Deep River, HGTV’s newest show, We Bought the Farm, is highlighting one of the town’s historic gems, the Old Shailer Farmhouse, located at 256 Cedar Swamp Road.

Episode four in the show’s first season showcases reasonably priced “gentleman farm” properties in this area of Connecticut. It follows families, throughout the country, who are in search of the perfect farmhouse and property for them.

The episode, in which the Deep River farm will be featured, also highlights three other properties, in Killingworth, Colchester and Lyme. Which home do dietitian Claire and her husband Steve choose?

“You’ll have to watch and see,” said real estate agent Heather Clinton of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty’s Madison office.

Clinton, a fourth generation real estate agent and Connecticut native, is the agent representing the couple on the show and said it was a very exciting experience.

“I loved it,” said Clinton, who is very familiar with the area and happy to have had the chance to showcase the beautiful homes.

“The crew was excellent,” said Clinton. “They took a lot of time interviewing me and selecting the properties, all of which were stunning and very representative of how beautiful Connecticut is.”

All four of the homes where priced under $600,000. Clinton explained that this was by design as the main focus of the series is to highlight farm properties that are within people’s means and affordable, proving you don’t have to be a millionaire to buy the farm of your dreams.

“It was an incredible experience, one I would absolutely do again,” said Clinton, who explained that each home and property was very unique. “It was a chance to step back in time and get a glimpse of what life here in Connecticut started out like. I am honored to have participated in this and to have been given the opportunity to fall in love with different parts of the state.”

Clinton, who would not disclose which property the couple chose, praised the Deep River property for its beauty, history, and unique location.

The antique Cape Cod style home, listed by Rick Weiner of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty’s Essex office, was built in 1780. The property is 2.3 acres and features frontage on Shailer Pond. The home is a classic farmhouse, with wide board chestnut floors, a trio of fireplaces, two outbuildings, and updates completed by Skip Broom Housewright.

In addition the property boasts bountiful fruit trees bordered by beautiful hand-laid stone walls, all adjacent to hundreds of acres of state forest open to hiking or horseback riding.

It was a perfect fit for the HGTV series working to unite families wishing for wide-open spaces, life in the great outdoors and farm living.

“The state of Connecticut has a very rich agricultural history so it is fitting that this series focused an episode here,” said Clinton.
