March 22, 2016: A group of visually impaired veterans from the Eastern Blind Rehabilitation Center at the West Haven Veterans Administration Hospital were transported to the Branford Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 12106 home on Sat., March 18 to meet with members of the Take A Vet Fishing (www.TAVF.org) project.

Project members helped the veterans to create a variety of artificial fly fishing lures from bits of feathers and yarn secured to fishing hooks. These fly lures will be used by the veterans to catch fish during the summer at the Killams Point Camp, owned by the First Congregational Church of Branford. Creating fly fishing lures requires patience, skill and special tools, provided to the veterans by fellow fishermen.

The veterans were entertained by nautical and Irish music played by the Urban Legend band. Refreshments were provided by Jersey Mike's Subs and the business is also donating funds from the sale of food at Branford Jersey Mike's on March 30 to TAVF.

TAVF has allowed over 4,300 veterans to enjoy a day of fishing during the past ten years. TAVF members are all unpaid volunteers. Many local service organizations, churches, businesses and individuals also support TAVF.

Reporters Note: Jersey Mike's Subs, located at 845 West Main St. in Branford (on Branford Hill) will donate 100 percent of food sales on Wed. March 30, 2016 to TAVF. More information available at www.facebook.com/TakeAVetFishing
