I-95 North Closed in Madison After Bus Rollover

Emergency crews are responding to a bus crash on Interstate 95 North in Madison between exits 61 and 62 that has shutdown the highway. The rollover occured around 12:30 p.m.

"It looks to be a tour bus," said Madison First Selectman Tom Banisch. "Everybody is on the scene. We probably have four or five ambulances out and then police, fire, rescue trucks. There has been a big response."

Trooper First Class Kelly Grant of the Public Information Office confirmed it was a tour bus and that crash victims are currently being directed to St. Raphael's and Yale New Haven Hospital.

A spokesperson for Yale New Haven Hospital said that they currently have eight patients from the incident. Middlesex Hospital's Shoreline Medical Center has received 16 patients.

State Police say that no passengers sustained life threatening injuries. Passengers who were uninjured were taken to the Madison Town Campus which served as a warming station. The Red Cross was brought in to help.

When asked about the cause of the crash, Grant said it is unclear

"I don't know about another vehicle being involved, it doesn't look like it but obviously they are going to determine the reason for the crash once they can do an investigation," she said.

The bus was carrying 55 passengers, and those injured are being taken to Yale New Haven Hospital. Mutual aid was requested.

According to Cody Chapman, a Mohegan Sun spokesman, the bus was heading to the casino.

Chapman said Mohegan Sun officials are working to gather more details and that additional buses coming to the casino from New York have been rerouted and sent back to New York.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy released this statement about the accident:

"We continue to monitor the situation closely and receive updates in real-time. Public Safety is our top priority and our office continues to work with state agencies and emergency management officials to that end. Our thoughts are with those who are injured, and we extend our gratitude to the first responders who are working to protect the safety of all those involved."

The highway is expected to be closed for a few more hours.

We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
