01/04/2016 11:00 PMA request for funds to hire an investigator in the search for a new Clinton police chief was approved by the Board of Finance Dec. 21, 2015. The investigator will conduct background checks on the final candidates for the job.
Clinton Police Commission Chair Peter Niles made the initial request at the Board of Selectmen meeting on Dec. 9, where a motion to appropriate monies from the town’s contingency fund, not to exceed $6,000, was unanimously approved and sent to the Board of Finance.
The Police Commission is in the process of vetting candidates to fill the vacancy created when Clinton Chief of Police Todd Lawrie retired in September 2015, after 28 years with the department. Retired Guilford police chief Thomas Terribile has been interim administrative chief since Sept. 22.
Niles hopes to have a new chief in place by mid-February. The five-member Police Commission has interviews scheduled with seven candidates on Saturday, Jan. 23 and plans to narrow the pool to two or three finalists within a day or two after the interviews. All seven candidates are from Connecticut.
Once the commission has selected applicants for a final screening, a professional investigator will conduct background checks, polygraph tests, and personnel file checks and report back to the commission within 10 business days.
“The investigator comes highly recommended by the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association,” says Niles.
The screenings are mandated by the state of Connecticut, and the cost is $3,000 per candidate. The commission hopes to limit the screening to two finalists.
