12/22/2015 04:00 PMPrompted by a spur of the moment decision to embark on a new phase in his life, retiree Ian Lewis, a long time local resident, said he could no longer bare to see the building that formerly housed Gather be vacant for any longer, so in late fall of this year, Lewis enlisted the help of his children (who are also local residents) and proudly opened the doors of Elephant Crossing, located at 104 Main Street in downtown Ivoryton.
With a want to pay homage to the rich ivory history that goes hand and hand with the area, Lewis asked his family to brainstorm for a name for the new business and his son Scott came up with the name Elephant Crossing.
Deeming it time to “re-gather” Lewis’s daughter Allison Harp shares her father’s affinity for the eclectic array of items such as gently used furniture, shiny new bracelets and earrings, cards, and home goods the new store offers. Harp now helps her father display goods and wares and mans the business’s online presence with an updated Facebook page, which has pictures of new goodies as they arrive.
“We are trying to offer a mix of different things,” said Harp. “We have local honey and beeswax candles, hand painted ornaments, décor items and collectibles. We really have something for everyone.”
The shop has been getting a lot of foot traffic from visitors attending the many and varied events taking place in the Ivoryton center over the past few months. Lewis said business is going well and everyone has been very supportive and welcoming.
“It’s been great so far, let’s hope it keeps up this way,” said Lewis, who does takes consignment pieces from time to time and welcomes those with interesting pieces to sell.
The store is open six days a week, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m., and is closed on Mondays. For more information, find Elephant Crossing on Facebook.
