Wellness Center at Old GHS in the Works

When the Town of Guilford decided to move ahead with the construction of a new high school, it also decided that it would renovate the science wing of the old high school as that wing was only 10 years old. With the high school students and staff settled into the new building, the renovation on the science wing has been underway.

Rick Maynard, director of Parks & Recreation, recently stopped by the building to check out progress on the facility as it is being transformed into a wellness center that will be operated by Guilford Parks & Recreation.

“It seems that they’ve done some of the wiring and lighting, but the floor still has to go in and the walls have to be painted—there’s still work to be done,” said Maynard. “We’ll be on board and ready to go as soon as we can get in there.”

While plans for the space have not yet been finalized, Maynard has sat in on several meetings, along with Guilford High School Athletic Director Jake Jarvis and Cliff Gurnham, director of facilities for Guilford Schools.

“We’ve talked about what it might look like and what it might need,” said Maynard. “For example, it’s important that there is air conditioning in the room with the exercise bikes.”

Maynard and Jarvis will have to work together as the high school’s weight room equipment is being moved into the wellness center and several of the teams will use the facility for training.

Maynard is hoping that the renovations will be completed by the springtime. He noted that the facility will operate with a schedule of programming with residents being able to sign up for classes that involve equipment.

Maynard is excited about adding these types of classes. Due to space and storage, the department can only currently offer fitness classes that don’t involve equipment, such as yoga, cardio, and aerobic classes.

“There are still some renovations to be done, but it’s progressing—it takes time to do these things,” said Maynard.
