State police said on Oct. 11 that the Groton man who was shot and killed by troopers after he pointed a gun at them during an Oct. 10 morning standoff at an Old Saybrook motel was a suspect in several recent area bank robberies.

They identified the man as Richard P. Love, 31, of Paul Revere Road, who was wanted in connection with bank robberies on Sept. 26 in Richmond, Rhode Island, Oct. 2 in East Lyme, Oct. 6 in Mystic, and possibly last Friday in Norwich.

In addition, state police announced that detectives seized large amount of cash believed to be related to the bank robberies inside Love’s motel room at the Econo Lodge on Boston Post Road. They also recovered approximately 180 bundles of heroin and suspected crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia, a .45 caliber handgun, and ammunition.

State police said that at approximately 1 a.m. on Oct. 10, Old Saybrook police received information that a suspect from the robberies was staying at the Econo Lodge. When police from Old Saybrook and Norwich arrived, they found Love brandishing a gun through a window and they heard gunshots from the room.

Old Saybrook and Norwich police secured the area, and members of the state police tactical team were called to the scene and the motel evacuated. Police said team members then entered the motel room and located Love, who pointed a gun at the officers and ignored orders to drop his weapon.

Two tactical team officers fired their weapons, striking the man, police said. They were identified as Trooper First Class Daniel McCarthy, a 23-year state police veteran, and Trooper First Class Carson Konow, an 8-year veteran.

Tactical team members provided first aid, but Love was declared dead by emergency medical personnel. No injuries were reported to police or bystanders.

The Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner will now conduct an autopsy and state police are continuing to investigate the incident.
