Look for the Branford Lions -- they're out at three key locations, collecting donations and gently used eyeglasses in a local push supporting the Lions’ global crusade to conquer blindness.
Based on World Health Organization statics estimating the world’s population of blind people could double in the next 25 years, Branford Lions Club joins a global effort, Lions World Sight Day, to heighten awareness and education about sight preservation and preventable blindness, according information supplied by Branford Lions Club.
“It’s estimated that 40 million people around the world are blind,” said Branford Lion’s David Minicozzi. “On Lions World Sight Day, the Branford Lions are working in unison with Lions clubs around the world to educate millions of people on the importance of proper eye health care.”
Branford Lions’ 61 members are out in force, collecting donations of cash and used eyeglasses outside Branford’s Stop & Shop, Walmart, and Caron’s Corner locations Oct. 15 - 17.
Branford Lions was chartered in 1951 and supports a number of local projects with efforts including participation in the annual Branford Festival, Branford Memorial Day Parade, Branford Lions Club Golf Tournament, and Fantasy of Lights (New Haven), among others. The club has fundraised to support the Branford Food Pantry, Brian’s Hope, Branford High School Scholarship Program, Fidelco Guide Dogs, and dozens of other charities. Most recently, the first annual Branford Lions Club Oktoberfest was held Oct. 4 at the Stony Creek Brewery with event proceeds benefiting the Community Dining Room.
