10/08/2015 12:01 AMTwenty years ago, the First Congregational Church of Branford saw a need in the community to help children with life-threatening illnesses in their family and Camp Totokett was founded as an outreach mission of the church.
The camp provides a week-long summer day camp experience at Killam’s Point, a church-owned property on the shores of Long Island Sound. The camp gives these children from the Greater New Haven area a respite from their often hectic family lives, a chance to regain some of their childhood.
The week-long camp includes transportation to and from Killam’s Point and the children have swimming, arts and crafts, music, fishing, and kayaking. Lunch is provided daily, the highlight of the week being the Big Green Pizza Truck. There is no cost to children or their families.
This year 45 campers attended and each camper is assigned a mentor; one-on-one mentoring is a hallmark of the program. The mentors are high school students from throughout Branford and beyond. The mentors most often return for successive years up to and sometimes through college.
State Representative Lonnie Reed came down to honor the camp’s 20th year and presented a proclamation from the Connecticut State Legislature recognizing the 20 years of service.
