Madison Town Officials Join Country School in Groundbreaking for New Athletic Fields

From left, Country School parent Leah Booth, students Elliott Booth and John and Catherine Arrandale, alumnus Christopher Arrandale, Madison Beach & Recreation Executive Director Scot Erskine, Madison Director of Public Works and Town Engineer Michael Ott, Madison Beach & Recreation Commission Chairman Tom Banisch, Madison First Selectman Fillmore McPherson, and The Country School Head of School John Fixx break ground on new athletic fields.

Madison town officials joined Country School administrators, trustees, and supporters for a groundbreaking ceremony on the site of the school’s new athletic fields.

In celebration of its 60th anniversary, the Country School is embarking on a major campus enhancement project, constructing two side-by-side soccer and lacrosse fields, a baseball and softball diamond, and, depending on the continued level of support, four tennis courts. The new athletic facilities are being constructed on land the school has owned for years, and the Town of Madison contributed field design and engineering services to support the project.

For years, the Country School has welcomed town teams to use its one soccer field for practices, games, and tournaments, and the town has allowed the Country School to play athletic contests on town facilities, including an annual night soccer game under the lights. In 2011, in gratitude to the town for its hospitality, the Country School’s graduating class selected Madison’s Strong Field refurbishment project as the focus of its annual service initiative. Through a student auction of services and other fundraising efforts, 8th graders raised $3,000 to contribute to the Strong Field project.
