09/29/2015 02:45 PMTour three historic Branford churches on the Town Green on Saturday, Oct. 10, guided by the expert eye and insight of local architect Anthony Terry of Terry Architecture, LLC.
The free tour, sponsored by Branford Arts & Cultural Alliance (BACA), steps off from the Academy on the Green at 2 p.m. on Oct. 10. As with BACA’s summer series of free photography exhibits at the Acadamy, the churches tour is part of the all-volunteer group’s on-going effort to invite residents to appreciate the arts in the community. BACA is asking interested community members to please register in advance to reserve a spot on the tour by contacting Richard Blacher at dblacher@snet.net.
Terry will discuss the structural design and construction of Trinity Episcopal, First Congregational, and First Baptist churches as well as touching on their history, with input and insight from the reverends Bill Keane, John David Heeck, and Sharon K. Gracen at their respective churches.
According to a press release from BACA, “The alliance’s interest in the churches is not as much historical as it is architectural, since each church building represents a very different style of classic church form. The oldest sanctuary is First Baptist, built in 1838 in the Greek revival style. The First Congregational, though the oldest congregation in town, has only been in its present structure since 1843. It represents a European style that was popular at the end of the 19th century. Trinity, with its distinctive red doors, was built in 1852 in the English Gothic style and is typically reminiscent of Anglican churches.”
