Saybrook Eyes Tree Removal/Trimming Options

A large branch from a silver maple tree recently fell on a parked car and crushed the roof, leading the town to hire a consultant to review the dead or dying silver maple trees planted along Nehantic and Attawanhood roads.

First Selectman Carl Fortuna, Jr., told the selectmen that he had hired a consultant from SavATree to assess the situation.

“The tree consultant will come down and prioritize the removal of the large old silver maples that are dead or dying,” said Fortuna.

The trees that the town’s tree warden has already identified as of concern exceed 15 specimens. Given the size of each of these old trees, removal of just one could cost $3,000 or more, so to remove all 15 would require a budget in excess of $45,000.

Fortuna was hopeful that the consultant would recommend pruning as a prudent solution for some of the dying trees.

The tree consultant is expected to present his findings to Fortuna sometime this month.
