The Garden Club of Madison has donated seven pin oak trees that will add shade and beauty to the picnic area of Salt Meadow Park. Pin oaks, also known as Quercus palustris, are native to the area and are one of the most popular ornamental trees in the United States. While they are fast growing, pollution tolerant, and transplant easily, it is their pyramid shape and bronze fall foliage that has them commonly used in landscapes. What makes them the most appropriate choice for this particular site, however, is that pin oaks can withstand intermittent floods during the dormant season. This gift is an expression of the garden club’s interest in identifying and supporting projects that enhance the Madison community for present and future generations.
