Democrats Select Candidates for November Elections

At a caucus held on July 21, Guilford Democrats nominated the six candidates for municipal office who will be on the Democratic ticket in November. They are: Matthew Hoey and Michael Ayles for Board of Finance; William Bloss, Kathleen Balestracci, and Christine Cohen for Board of Education; and Dennis Dostert for Board of Assessment Appeals. All but Cohen are incumbents. (The Board of Selectmen is on a four-year cycle and will not be up for re-election until 2017.) Democratic Town Committee Chair Walter Corbiere expressed confidence that the Democratic slate is a strong one.

“These men and women are extraordinary public servants,” stated Corbiere. “They have each had a significant impact on our quality of life in Guilford.

“Matt Hoey and Mike Ayles have led us responsibly through very difficult financial times while maintaining valuable services. More importantly, through their diligent fiscal guardianship, Guilford now boasts the largest rainy day fund in decades: eight percent,” Corbiere continued.

“Bill Bloss and Katie Balestracci have worked tirelessly to ensure our children have the best education possible; the results of their work are evident in the national accolades our school district receives for its achievements. During their tenure, we’ve built a new high school ahead of schedule and within budget, instituted all-day kindergarten, and developed a special education program that is a model for other districts. And Christine Cohen is a successful businesswoman, a consummate volunteer and a champion of public education,” Corbiere continued.

“Finally, Dennis Dostert has served Guilford for over 25 years in many capacities, and is regarded as a dedicated, thoughtful, and compassionate incumbent member of the Board of Assessment Appeals,” Corbiere concluded. “We as a town are fortunate to have such gifted people willing to serve our community.”
