07/09/2015 12:01 AMGirls from Grade 4 Junior Girl Scout Troop 62243 were recently given their Girl Scout Get Moving Journey Award. This award involved a yearlong endeavor through which girls explored engineering, energy efficiency, and environmental issues, as well as developed and completed a community service project at the Hubbard Community Garden. Led by Hubbard Community Garden Manager Terri Cain together with Girl Scout leaders Emily Oakes, Meghan Copeland, and Kaley DeGoursey, and working with parent volunteers Susan Merkle-Ward, Tara Lepro, and Ashley Griffin, the girls took on many garden projects such as moving a pallet of pavers, weeding and planting garden beds for the Guilford Food Bank, and preparing and planting a garden bed filled with native “three sisters” plots (corn, beans, and pumpkins) for use in the fall by A.W. Cox 2nd graders as part of their garden curriculum. The troop also learned how compost is made and discussed the importance of organic gardening, sustainability, and local food production. In addition to donating their time, the troop donated $150 worth of children’s gardening tools for use by A.W. Cox students and other children who participate in Children’s Garden activities.
