Two Arrested in Cedar Island Stabbing

Matthew Voog

Two men were arrested Wednesday after a fight between brothers left one with serious stab-wounds.

Clinton Police and the Clinton Fire Department responded to Cedar Island around 4:30 p.m. on the report of an injured person. Upon arriving at the scene, police determined that the victim, a 38-year-old seasonal resident of the island, had been stabbed multiple times in the chest and arm.  The victim was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital.

An investigation determined that the victim had been stabbed by his brother, Matthew Voog, 37, of Clinton. The two brothers resided together on the island. They had been drinking all day with their friend Eddie "Scoobie" Herger, 45 of Golden Bridge, N.Y. At some point during the afternoon the brothers began to argue, and Voog stabbed his brother multiple times.

Herger called 911 and went to the dock to wait for police and fire personnel to arrive. Voog showered to wash the blood off himeself. He admitted to stabbing th victim but said that the victim attacked him first by punching him in the face.

Voog was shirtless when police arrived, and police noticed the shirt burning on the ground nearby. The suspect and Herger told police they didn't know why the shirt was burning. They also told police they did not know where the knife was that was used to stab the victim. Herger provided a written statement to police denying knowledge of the incident or what happened to the knife or shirt.

Voog was arrested and transported the Clinton Police Department. The involved parties declined to allow police to search the residence for the knife. Police

Police secured the scene and applied for a search warrant to search the residence and the property for the knife. While waiting for the warrant to be signed, Herger returned and spoke to police. He now stated that he aided the suspect in burning the suspect's shirt because it was had the victim's blood on it. Herger also took the knife and washed the blood from the knife before police arrived. He put it in the kitchen sink after it was washed. It was also determined during the investigation that the victim's 10-year-old son was also present and witnessed part of this physical altercation. He had been visiting with his father for vacation.  He was released to his mother who responded from out of state.

Voog was charged with assault in the first degree, risk of injury to a minor, tampering with evidence, and interfering with police. Voog was held on a $1,000,000 bond and appeared in court on July 2.

Herger was arrested after threatening both officers on the scene. According to police, Herger said he was going to take their guns from them and kill them both. He lunged at one of the officers and had to be physically restrained. Herger was charged with tampering with evidence, providing a false statement to police, and two counts of interfering with police. He was held on a $25,000 bond and appeared in court on July 2.
