07/02/2015 12:01 AMEmma Pendl-Robinson of Branford recently received her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a girl can earn in Girl Scouting. In order to earn the Gold Award, senior and ambassador Girl Scouts in grades 9 through 12 spend at least 80 hours researching issues, assessing community needs and resources, building a team, and making a sustainable impact in the community. A Gold Award recipient’s accomplishments reflect leadership and citizenship skills that set her apart as a community leader.
Pendl-Robinson’s project helped middle school students become more interested in pursuing a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) by creating a math club at her local middle school. She promoted critical and higher-order thinking through different applications of math in and out of the classroom. The club met once a week and participated in math activities promoting teamwork and problem-solving. Pendl-Robinson’s math club will continue to run when she graduates from high school.
