DHHS Presents Class of 2015 Awards and Scholarships

The highly anticipated annual Senior Award and Scholarship Ceremony took place recently at Daniel Hand High School (DHHS). In all, 19 awards and 59 scholarships were presented in the program. The scholarships and awards represented funds provided through the DHHS Scholarship Committee and many generous and supportive community agencies. Many civic organizations such as the American Legion, Rotary, Knights of Columbus, Madison Jaycees, and Madison Chamber of Commerce, Madison Foundation, and Madison Newcomers sponsored awards and scholarships. The DHHS Guidance Department handles all of the applications and processing and much of the selection for the numerous scholarships and awards.

Clay Sweitzer was the proud recipient of the Katie Battison Memorial Scholarship presented by Madison Youth Services and managed by the Madison Foundation. The award was developed in 1998 in memory of 17-year-old Katherine “Katie” Battison, who died in a car accident in 1998. Battison was an honored DHHS scholar, athlete, violinist, accomplished hunter-jumper, and active in Madison Youth Services as a peer advocate and Youth Services Safe Rides. The scholarship in her memory is awarded to a college-bound graduating senior member of Madison Youth Services’ Peer Advocates Program who has shown a significant label of caring for others and demonstrates those qualities Battison exemplified.

Another memorial fund, also managed by the Madison Foundation, is the Elissa Sullivan Fund. Sullivan was brilliant, talented, and a promising 2001 graduate of DHHS. She was passionate about art, literature scholarship, and teaching. A fund was established in her memory in March 2005. The scholarship was presented to Laura Condrin, whose artistic gifts and plan to pursue the arts clearly meet the scholarship’s ambition to support a member of the graduating class planning to pursue a career in fine arts, photography, or art education.
