Riggio’s Supports Common Good Gardens

Dave Treasselt, Riggio Garden Center’s grower, helps load seedlings with Claire Matthews of Essex, the chair of Common Good Gardens’ board.

More than 100 eggplant, tomato, and pepper seedlings were planted at Common Good Gardens in Old Saybrook recently thanks to the generosity of Riggio’s Garden Center in Essex. Each year, Riggio’s grows seedlings for the non-profit garden, which is in its 14th year growing and delivering vegetables and blueberries to the Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries.

The Head Start program, which meets at Grace Church, recently came to the garden to plant four kinds of radishes. The children, staff, and mothers plan to harvest their crop to make salads for the church’s Wednesday meal site.

Common Good Gardens is always in need of volunteers. The group gardens on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings. For more information, call 860-526-3459 or visit www.commongoodgardens.org or the Common Good Gardens Facebook page.
