06/09/2015 12:00 AMThe Cumberland Farms Convenience Store at 82 Main Street, Centerbrook, is hoping to demolish its current facility to make room for a relocated store that’s a little more than twice the size.
The business submitted an application to the Essex Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) requesting variances to allow demolition of the current 1,800-square-foot retail store and relocate a larger, 4,250-square-foot store on the site.
Although the ZBA did not vote on the application, Cumberland Farms withdrew the application, and representatives said they’d return with a new proposal soon.
Currently Essex zoning regulations prohibit more than 65 percent lot coverage with a structure; Cumberland Farms’s initial request asked for 72.7 percent lot coverage.
The expansion plan also requested that more than 25 percent of the available parking spaces be between the new building and the street, and an increase in building coverage from 6.3 percent to 16.8 percent; 15 percent is the maximum building coverage allowed by town regulations.
