Boy Scout Troop 474 Participates in Guilford Community Service Project

Members from Boy Scout Troop 474 in Guilford joined the staff of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in their effort to clean up the nesting sites of the roseate terns and common terns on Faulkner’s Island. This has to happen before the terns come back to nest, but it is a bit tricky to plan this type of community service project. The water and air temperature combined must equal at least 100 degrees in order for transport to and from the island to happen, and the waves cannot be rough. Considering the weather, it was the perfect weekend to get a lot of work done. The troop split up into three different crews, each working with a staff member from Inland Fisheries. The Scouts cleaned up nesting sites, planted nesting boxes and chick shelters, repaired the boat house floor and walls, cleaned up all the trash that washed up on the beaches and rocks, repaired a ramp going up to the outhouse, and attempted to get an old tractor back up and running. In total, the service hours equaled at least five hours on Saturday and at least three hours on Sunday. All were happy with what a bit of hard work had accomplished. Troop 474 thanks wildlife biologist Kristina Vagos, who worked with the Scouts to get everything coordinated, and all of her staff who helped to make this happened.
