Branford High School (BHS) junior Etta Hanlon displays the two national awards she won for her Holiday Recycling program. Pictured (left to right) are State Representative Lonnie Reed, Hanlon, Branford Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator Dan McGowan, and BHS Principal Lee Panagoulis. Hanlon received the awards from Keeping America Beautiful, the largest community improvement organization in the United States, with approximately 600 affiliate organizations (similar to local chapters) and more than 1,000 community organizations. She took third place nationally in the Recycling and Waste Reduction category and was also recognized with an Individual Youth Distinguished Service Award. The recycling program is hoping to expand to 10 Southern Connecticut towns this holiday season and is also being studied by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.
