Garden Club Markets Dot the Shoreline This Weekend

Mother's Day weekend means plant sales and garden markets hosted by the area's local garden clubs. From North Haven to Essex, there's an event for everyone. Here's a round-up of local plant sales and garden markets.

Essex

The Essex Garden Club brings its May Market back to the village green on Saturday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This sole fundraising event for the club features annual plants, herbs, garlic salt, gently used home and garden treasures, jewelry, worms for composting, nurtured members' plants, a café for lunch, and a silent auction.

The proceeds from May Market are used to support the club's educational and civic improvement projects, new and ongoing. For more information, visit www.essexgardenclubct.org.

Guilford

The Leetes Island Garden Club holds its plant and bake sale on Saturday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to noon on the Guilford Green. The sale includes a wide variety of potted perennials from members' gardens, baked goods, hanging baskets, and garden ornaments. There will also be a specialty area called the "Collector's Corner" in which plant lovers can find more unusual perennials.

All proceeds from the sale go to Guilford civic projects, including plantings at the Guilford Marina and library, as well as pots of flowers near the Green. For more information, call 203-453-1207.

Madison

The Friends of Hammonasset holds their 15th annual Plant and Shrub Sale daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through mid-June or until all plants have sold at a location one-third of a mile east of the main entrance to Hammonasset Beach State Park, Route 1, Madison. The sale offers hanging baskets, perennials, shrubs, and four-inch annuals and flats of bedding plants and vegetables.

Northford

A Mother's Day Weekend Flower sale is at the Nortford Congregational Church,4 Old Post Road, on Friday May 8 and Saturday May 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, May 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A Bake sale will also be taking place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

North Haven

The North Haven Garden Club hosts its annual May Market on Saturday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to noon on the North Haven Town Green. The sale features annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, geraniums, tomatoes, bushes, shrubs, herbs, baked goods, and more. Milkweed seed packets will also be for sale.

Old Saybrook

The Old Saybrook Garden Club holds its annual Gardeners' Market on Friday, May 8 from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Old Saybrook Town Green on Main Street. The rain-or-shine sale includes annuals, perennials, members' plants, baked goods, gently used gardening tools, and other related items. Proceeds benefit the Old Saybrook Garden Club's civic beautification projects.

Westbrook

The Westbrook Garden Club holds its annual Garden Market on Saturday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Westbrook Town Green. The market features vegetable plants and flowering annuals, perennials from members' gardens, Mother's Day gifts, and garden whimsies. Children can pot a plant for mom for free.
