Michael C. Chapman Attains Eagle Scout Rank

Michael C. Chapman, a member of Guilford Troop 474, was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. Scoutmaster Matt Weidman presided over the Eagle Court of Honor ceremony that was held recently at the Nathaniel B. Greene Community Center. In order to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouting, Chapman had to earn at least 21 merit badges on subjects such as citizenship, first aid, and camping. In addition, he had to plan and lead a special project that benefitted the community. Chapmanā€™s community service project was building a new bocce court at Chittenden Park for the Guilford Parks and Recreation Department. Three layers of stone and stone dust were laid down to build a 78-foot by 15-foot foundation, and then the bocce court was built of wood on top of the stone foundation. Lafata & Son, Inc., of Guilford donated the excavator and heavy equipment used to prepare the site and move the stone. Special guests at the Eagle Court of Honor ceremony included Father Andres Mendoza, State Representative Sean Scanlon, First Selectman Joseph Mazza, and Parks & Recreation Director Rick Maynard.
