CELC’s CANstruction project recently gained momentum as students met with architect Kyle Bradley of HH Purdy Architects. Decisions were made related to the types of cans that should be included as part of their colossal structure, which they will enter into the 2015 statewide CANstruction competition sponsored by American Institute of Architects (AIA) in support of the Connecticut Food Bank.

This student/architect team designed and now plans to construct a pie chart made entirely of food cans, with a slice representing the percentage of people who go hungry in Connecticut and another slice representing the amount of food waste. CELC students raised nearly $5,000 in sponsorships in order to purchase the thousands of cans required to build their intended design.

The CANstruction competition and exhibit will take place Tuesday, May 5 at the Durham Fairgrounds. Schools from throughout the state will participate. All of the cans from the participating groups ultimately will be donated to the Connecticut Food Bank when the event concludes. The public is welcome to attend; CANstructures will be on display through Thursday, May 7 as part of Associated Builders and Contractors Construction Pro Rodeo.
