To Open or Close Schools on Vets Day

GUILFORD - The Board of Education decided Monday night to hold off on setting a 2015-16 school calendar as it debated whether or not classes should or shouldn’t be held on Veterans Day.

The school board had on its agenda possible action on the 2015-16 calendar, but after a thorough discussion and listening to speakers talk, in favor and opposed, to closing school on Veterans Day, decided to put off voting on the calendar until its December meeting.

Currently, Guilford doesn't send kids to school on Veterans Day, though many communities, including Branford and Madison, do.

Statewide, 60 percent of the schools are closed on Veterans Day and 40 percent are open, according to the Connecticut Department of Education.
