Residents Rally Against Tabor for Public Works

A crowd of over 40 residents opposed to building a new Public Works on town-owned land off Tabor Drive rallied at 10 a.m. today. in Tabor church parking lot.

The rally coincided with the start of a Shoreline Greenway Trail "First Saturday: Winter Walk on the Tabor property, with invited guest, Second Selectman Andrew Campbell (D).

Instead of making the trail walk this morning, Campbell came over to speak with rally organizer, Fred Russo. Campbell then answered questions from residents for about an hour; sticking with his submission that the Tabor site is best for the new facility. Third Selectman Jamie Cosgrove (R) also gave information to the crowd, most of which disputed Campbell's reasons for voting to support use of 10 acres of the 77-acre Tabor land for the new facility.

First Selectman Anthony "Unk" DaRos (D) (not present at the rally) and Campbell voted against Cosgrove on Nov. 8 in a Board of Selectmen's (BOS) decision calling to  use the Tabor property as the site for developing a $325,000 design plan for the new Public Works.

This morning, Campbell was to take the day's hike and talk about the "recreational possibilities" of the property. A new Master Plan of the property, unveiled at the Dec. 15 BOS meeting by DaRos, shows a Public Works Facility and several recreational playing fields. The Public Works facility would be developed first, with three fields (and potentially additional fields) to be developed at some point in the future.

The BOS recommendation has not yet ben put before the Board of Finance for a vote; if approved, it would then need to go on to the Representative Town Meeting. As of yet, the First Selectman has not sent the recommendation onto the BOF to have it placed on meeting agenda for a vote. The Sound asked Campbell at the rally when he thought the item might move forward; Campbell said he did not know for certain but noted the earliest it could be placed on the BOF agenda would be for its Jan. 28 regular meeting.
