Clinton Cops Rescue Elderly Woman from River

At about 913 a.m. on July 15, Clinton Police received a call reporting that an elderly woman was missing from her home at Sterling Village, an elderly housing community. As dispatchers were attempting to get further information, the caller stated that the missing woman, who reportedly suffers from dementia, had just been seen behind #9 Sterling Village, walking on a footpath. The caller then reported that a witness observed the woman leaving the foot path and wading into the water that abuts the properties. This brackish water is a tributary to the Indian River.

Officers Daniel Foito and Glenn Smith were the first officers to respond to the scene. Obtaining information from on scene witnesses, they were able to ascertain where the woman was in the water. This area is very overgrown with vegetation and the victim was not easily spotted. They did locate her floating in the water about 25 feet from the bank of the river.

Removing their duty belts and ballistic vests, both officers entered the water and effected a rescue of the woman, who was reportedly despondent.

The woman was subsequently treated by members of the Clinton Fire Department and transported to Middlesex Memorial Hospital Shoreline Clinic.
