VRHS Principal Rice 'Resigns'

Parents and students demonstrated outside Region 4 administration offices on Sept. 24 in response to rumors about Valley Regional High School Principal Eric Rice's dismissal. Today, the superintendent of schools went on record, declaring Rice's departure a "resignation."

The following statement was issued by Dr. Ruth Levy, superintendent of schools, for the Region 4 school district. This statement was issued just before 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13. No further information was immediately available.

"Last evening the Region 4 Board of Education held a special meeting where they voted to accept the resignation of Eric Rice. Please join us in thanking Mr. Rice for his service and wishing him the best in his future endeavors. Associate Principal Kristina Martineau will serve as acting principal for the remainder of the 2010-2011 school year. Current assistant superintendent and former Valley Regional High School principal Ian Neviaser will act in a supporting role to help Mrs. Martineau maintain our commitment to make Valley Regional High School a premier high school in Connecticut and the nation. Thank you for your continued support of Valley Regional High School and the Region 4 schools."

Eric Rice, a Chester resident, was hired by the Region 4 this summer to become the new principal at Valley Regional High School. He was recruited and hired to replace Neviaser, who moved on to become assistant superintendent. Rice, previously principal at a science and technology magnet high school in Hartford, started at Valley Regional Aug. 1. Just two weeks after the start of school, according to some reports, Levy gave Rice two weeks notice, allegedly giving him the choice to resign or to be terminated. Rice continued to appear at the school each day and, according to reports from those who know the family, had retained an attorney.

On Friday, Oct. 8, when no students and most staff were not at the school because it was listed as a professional development day, Levy is reported to have terminated Rice.
