Thanks to My Hometown

Having just celebrated another Thanksgiving, I thought it was about time to say thank you to a few people. When I started this column in December 2005, I had no idea of the fun it would be. I can't tell you the number of people who in casual conversation have

expressed how much they enjoy the column. That has meant so much to hear such nice feedback. I have run into some old friends and acquaintances whom I have not seen in many moons who asked me if I was "that Mike Russo?" This past week, for

example, I saw an old classmate from grammar school who said he enjoyed the stories.

My original intent in writing was to use the column as a creative outlet for sharing stories of growing up in a small town and remembering some of the things that no longer are part of the landscape but still linger in our memories. What I have found is that the column has jogged our collective memory and reminded us all that we are indeed getting older.

So…I would like to thank The Sound for giving me the opportunity to put down my thoughts on paper. He has encouraged me and paid me some nice compliments. I would like to thank a 94 year-old woman who lives in town and looks forward to my column each month as she reminisces about earlier times.

When I wrote a story about the old Collins and Freeman's

hardware store, the folks at

Country Paint & Hardware in North Branford enjoyed it so much that they sent me a great letter along with a $25 gift certificate, which I have yet to use (but I will). Thanks guys!

When I wrote an article about an old friend who was a hero in one of our basketball games, we were able to reconnect after

30-plus years.

I would like to thank my kids, who have encouraged me and have enjoyed just a tiny bit of

celebrity when people ask me, "Are you the writer?"

As we approach another Christmas and New Year's and enjoy God's blessing, thank you and God bless.
