Microtransit Pilot Program Launched

Governor Ned Lamont and the Connecticut Department of Transportation have awarded $19.5 million to fund nine transit districts and municipalities in Connecticut for a two-year pilot program for on-demand microtransit services. The new microtransit services will begin in various communities this spring and summer, through the end of June.

Microtransit service is an accessible, on-demand mode of transportation that allows customers to use a smartphone app or telephone number to request and schedule a ride within designated service areas.

More information and details about their services is available from individual transit organizations.

In this area, River Valley Transit (RVT) and the Estuary Transit District (ETD) will participate in the XtraMile program starting May 28.

In Madison and Guilford, the program will run:

The fare will be $1.75 one way.

In addition to the entire town boundaries of Madison and Guilford, the service is also being offered in the heart of Middletown, and in the Bell Town area of East Hampton. Visit portal.ct.gov/dot/publictrans/bureau-of-public-transportation/microtransit-services#XTRAMILE for additional information about the entire program and about Middletown and East Hampton specifically.

Customers will have the option to book their ride through the app or call-in option. Riders will be receiving ETAs and live updates through text and the app.
