One-Day Food Drive On April 20

For the 12th year, Connecticut shoreline fire departments will partner with The Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries (SSKP) to host a one-day food drive on Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to collect non-perishable food at a variety of fire stations, grocery stores, and other businesses. The number of people visiting food pantries is still much higher than pre-pandemic levels, so the need is great. Last year, SSKP distributed almost 2 million pounds of food, more than ever before in its 35-year history. They say, “Every item of food donated will make a real difference to local families struggling with food insecurity.” Shoreline fire departments already committed to participate include Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Clinton, Killingworth, North Madison, and Chester. Other fire departments may join as well. Other locations include Stop & Shop in Old Saybrook and Clinton; Essex FD at DG Market in Essex; Big Y in Old Saybrook and Clinton; ShopRite in Clinton; and Walmart in Old Saybrook and Robert’s Food Center in Madison. In addition, non-perishable food donations can be brought to Mirsina’s Restaurant in Old Saybrook; the Parthenon Diner in Old Saybrook; Sal’s Pizza & Pasta in Old Saybrook; and Scotch Plains Tavern in Essex as well as the Essex Savings Bank in Old Saybrook. In addition, food drive donations can be made by check. Please make the check payable to SSKP (with “FD Drive” in the memo field) and drop off the check on Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at one of the participating fire stations.
