This collection of stories is based on Ovid’s nearly 12,000-line poem, Metamorphoses. The stories in both the original and in this collection recount Roman myths of transformation, such as the tales of Daphne, Eurydice, and Arachne. In McLaughlin’s version, they’re all told from the female characters’ perspective. Seductresses, goddesses, nymphs, and ordinary women seek love and vengeance and endure violence and sexual assault in a rollicking retelling that is full of attitude, lyricism, and wit.
