Books like this not only inform, but, like a trail of breadcrumbs through the forest, lead you on to learn more. A group of students is encouraged by their mentor, Franz Boas, to look at non-western European and white societies and remove the labels put on them. They went into the field—to Samoa, Haiti, the Sioux country, post-war Japan—and looked, talked, listened, and appreciated that these cultures are not less or lacking, just different. This well-written book is a pleasure to read.
