This is a haunting tale of a tragic accident which sets in motion a chain of events that will take years to overcome. Landreaux Iron is stalking a deer in North Dakota in 1999 when he accidentally kills his neighbor’s five year-old son, Dusty. These two families have been very close. Their wives are half sisters. In the Indian tradition, Landreaux must atone for this act. He does so by giving his son, La Rose, to Peter and Nola. Erdrich’s story is a tale of loss, justice, and forgiveness written with expertise by an author who is well versed in Indian folklore.
