Proud of You All

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Guilford High School musical Legally Blonde. Once again, Guilford put on a stellar performance and it seemed as if each part was cast flawlessly. Director Cara Mulqueen-Teasdale began the show by thanking the staff and students of the stage management, tech crews, and orchestra. Bringing the crew on stage was a great way to acknowledge what they do behind the scenes to make the show successful.

To my surprise, several students I had taught in first grade at Guilford Lakes were integral to the success of this show. As I remembered their little faces in my class and how many of them were a bit shy, I thought of all the people who helped these students get to where they are today.

I recalled the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Yes, it takes encouraging parents to help make the commitment, as well as teachers and music instructors, to help these students try something new. As I read each of the student bios in the program, some of them stated this was their first performance. They were encouraged by friends and staff to take a chance and try out even though they had never performed or sang solo before. In their bios, they thanked the director and other staff members, and many even thanked student stage managers as well. It may take a village, but it takes many caring individuals along the way to make a difference in a child’s life. Thanks to anyone who has ever encouraged students to try something new.

Congratulations to Jackson, Carter, and Maddie for great performances, stage managers Valentina and Mairin, Henry on set, and Jake on percussion. I am so proud of you all!
