Concerns About the Plan

We’re writing about the redevelopment of Hubbard Park, which is in the works by the Town of Essex. The plan comes out of a 2022 STEAP Grant proposal and award.

The plan includes a new concession house along the north border of the park, an asphalt/gravel parking lot for 38 cars (with 24-car spill over), a sidewalk through the park with timber guardrails and polled signs, a volleyball court, and more.

We have serious concerns about the plan, namely, the reduction of the existing multi-use green space, the environmental impact of a paved/graveled parking lot, and, of course, the aesthetics. Another version, with only the concession house, was uploaded on March 14.

The first part of the plan, the concession house, was addressed at the March 19 Zoning Board of Appeals meeting. Assuming the variance has passed (not sure at the time of this writing), the next step will be a meeting to review the proposed park improvements (not Planning and Zoning) on a date to be determined.

The train has left the station. It’s our hope to slow it down so that all of us who use and love the park — from treasure seekers to tiny sledders, sports enthusiasts, dog lovers, and more — can have a say in how it is designed!
