Let’s Plant Bananas

As I contemplate Tweed-New Haven Airport over all these years, it defies logic.

Its property is 90% in East Haven, and we have no say over it. We get no tax money except a pittance from the state for non-taxable land. We have to live with all the health problems caused by air, car, and truck traffic. People are leaving Greater New Haven, not flying in here—there’s no economic benefit, certainly not to East Haven. There is a monumental impact when building on wetlands, and we have to deal with it.

Shall we say advantage has been taken of our town over many years? Now, all this is multiplied many times.

I have a friend who just returned from the Canary Islands in the Atlantic. She told me there is a no-fly zone over the islands because the residents don’t want their banana crops tainted by all the fumes emitted from the planes. What do you say? Let’s plant bananas in East Haven!
