A Complete Mystery

I’m sure many will agree that living in a safe, crime-free environment is high on most people’s priority list. Despite a crime uptick in recent years, for the most part, Guilford is still a safe town, and I am sure we are all glad of that.

But what makes a safe environment? It really comes down to the people who either live or visit a locality, and we are fortunate that while crime is exploding all over this nation, we in Guilford are safe in our little bubble.

Unfortunately, that may be about to change; unbeknown to most people and seemingly “under the radar,” there are plans to locate a methadone clinic on Route 1 close to Boston Street. This will also put it close to private homes and, unbelievably, a daycare center.

This clinic is planned to cater to many hundreds of drug addicts from New London to New Haven. We can, therefore, expect Guilford to receive a continuous flow of less than stellar individuals, the addicts, likely drug dealers looking to make a sale, and other shady characters from the drugs world looking to buy.

I don’t think I am painting too dire a picture; it is easy to visualize the people hanging around, and we can see the dreadful consequences wherever drug addiction is prevalent, with crime spiking.

While we might hope that our leaders would want to protect our town and its citizens from damage, the opposite seems to be the case with our first selectman and the Planning and Zoning Commission being all in and pushing this proposal forward. Why this should be is a complete mystery to me!
