Don’t Listen to the Noise

The Republican campaign slogan for the candidate for Deep River first selectman is “It’s about Deep River, not politics.” Their position is Democratic leadership has governed for the benefit of the party over representing all residents equally. That is disingenuous, given Republicans failed to fully participate and represent their constituents and policies in municipal elections for the past two decades.

The first selectman is the town’s top elected official responsible for government administration, the budget, strategies, and programs and systems. The first selectman must represent all residents regardless of political party and balance preserving the unique quality of the town while being fiscally sound and moving the town forward.

From 2003 to 2021, the Democratic candidates for first selectman ran unopposed in eight out of 10 elections. There was no Republican candidate for first selectman. That is not a strong record of leadership or involvement in town government. Republicans can’t forfeit elections and then complain the Democrats won.

Democratic candidates, however, showed up in every election and worked diligently for Deep River for decades. Under Democratic leadership, the Board of Selectman successfully manages our municipal government and works collaboratively with all residents. They implement fiscally responsible and effective policies and programs for education, environmental, infrastructure, public safety, health, and social service systems. They have the institutional knowledge and experience that makes them committed and proven leaders with a strong vision for the town.

The Democratic candidates have deep roots, educate their children, own homes, and run businesses in town. Most importantly, they have consistently worked to improve our government and town. They make the hard decisions about what’s best for Deep River, not a political party. They do real work every day, not just talk.

Don’t listen to the noise. Vote for the slate of Democratic candidates on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
