Continue Years of Progress

Back in 2019, before we went into full pandemic, I met Peggy Lyons running for first selectman. She was forthright, intelligent, with a solid financial background, and committed to helping our lovely town thrive. Years before, another woman ran unsuccessfully. But Peggy was different and seemed to have all the right characteristics and a mission going forward. How lucky we have been!

The last administration spent $25,000 just to test what to do with the Academy School building. Unrealistic projects were floated, not based on voter preference. Shoreline remediation in the face of rising sea levels was not addressed. What to do with Island Avenue School? Student populations changing left open questions on upgrading/consolidating other schools. Then, the ensuing pandemic, how would this be managed?

Fast forward to 2023. Thankfully, Peggy was elected four years ago. During the pandemic, we received weekly updates regarding vaccinations and mask reminders, how town residents were faring and where to go with questions, as well as during severe weather events. We had a real voice in Town Hall. And now we have a Coastal Resiliency Fund in response to our rising sea level. The Academy Community Center will now become a reality. Island Avenue School has been sold, and the consolidation and renewal of school buildings has been accomplished. We have a new town charter reflecting ethics and accountability.

The Academy Community project and many other improvements, including the new Surf Club playground, are thanks to Peggy's pursuit of state grants for our town, totaling $13 million. I don't think you could ask for a more responsive and results-oriented first selectwoman than Peggy. I urge your readers to continue our years of progress and vote Peggy Lyons for first selectwoman.
