Dedicating a Blue Star Memorial

You may have noticed them, large markers with a blue star emblem erected on highways and in other memorial locations across the United States. They are Blue Star Highway Markers, honoring the American men and women who have served, currently serve, or will serve in the armed services of the United States. The National Garden Clubs, Inc. established this program after World War II, and there are approximately 25 Blue Star Markers just in Connecticut.

After many months of planning, and with the approval of the National Gardens Club, Inc. and the Federated Garden Club of CT, the Old Saybrook Garden Club, in cooperation with the Town of Old Saybrook, will dedicate a Blue Star Memorial on Main Street. The Old Saybrook Garden Club undertook this project with the aid of the local Blue Star Mothers and local veterans organizations across our town. Many thanks to First Selectman Carl Fortuna, Bill Claffey, OSDPW, Ray Allen, Old Saybrook Parks & Recreation, and numerous organizations in town, including the Rotary Club.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, at 10 a.m., rain or shine, the dedication ceremony will take place at the site of the marker, 255 Main Street, across from The Kate. This ceremony is open to the public.
