09/06/2023 11:04 AMI personally recommend Heidi Avila as a Democratic candidate for the North Haven Board of Education (BOE). She has impressed me with her contributions to the Democratic Town Committee (DTC), her reputation as a highly respected attorney working in our community, and, in particular, her responses to the questions posed by the DTC Nominating Committee. I found it very refreshing to hear Heidi describe her proposed balanced approach to overseeing the top priorities for our town’s public school system.
Heidi has a no-nonsense attitude about education because she has “walked the walk.” She clearly values literacy and academic achievement - as a lifelong student, attorney, local business owner, and responsible parent. She emphasizes the critical need for testing, data analysis, required reading, study skills, as well as accountability in order to improve the quality of education. On the BOE, Heidi would work tirelessly to enable students to achieve their full academic potential and enhance their future prospects.
Heidi also appreciates the importance of creating a safe, welcoming, and nurturing environment for all students. The difference is, for Heidi, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is not just a social theory or a progressive cause or a rallying cry – it is her daily reality. As a woman, Latina, and mother of bi-racial children, she has first-hand knowledge of the devastating effects of bullying and discrimination. Her lived experiences, combined with her legal training, make her an ideal advocate for all students in our community—especially those from marginalized populations. I firmly believe that Heidi will make positive contributions to the BOE and give our students the best chance for success in the real world.
I ask all registered Democrats in North Haven to please consider voting for Heidi Avila in the Democratic Primary on Tuesday, Sept. 12.
