Transparent, Responsible

The voters of Old Saybrook need to know the current Police Commission has demonstrated both transparency and responsibility since the last election. Public comment is a part of every meeting both at the beginning and the end. The revised bylaw on comment also provides for an individual to express general concern not just commendation. Led by a Democratic majority, the commission established the policy of publishing agendas on the town website no less than 72 hours before a scheduled meeting. That contributes to transparency.

Responsibility was demonstrated by approving the retention of good police cars for all School Resource Officers rather than trading them in or selling them at auction. After deliberations in executive session for security reasons, new tactical equipment was approved to replace older, outdated equipment in order to increase the safety of our officers. As Chief Spera suggested, much of the expense was covered through the use of existing off-budget accounts rather than taxpayer money.

The Democratic majority has worked diligently to keep promises made in the last election. The path has not been an easy one. Whatever your party affiliation, your vote is needed on November 7th for Police Commission candidate Mark Ciliano to continue the work that needs to be done. See you at the polls.
