Help Shape the Future

I was born and raised in Chester. When it came time to purchase a home, I looked at other shoreline communities but decided to stay in Chester due to its quiet, small-town lifestyle. It just so happens I purchased a home on Pratt Street which is now at the center of the affordable housing controversy.

The creation of affordable housing in our community is important. The high cost of housing in our state is a major obstacle for young adults like me. Developments need to be planned with respect for the existing neighbors and the character of community. Chester needs a more thoughtful approach to affordable housing, like the towns of Westport and Guilford have implemented. We need to give citizens a chance to help shape the future of our community rather than allowing a flawed state law, 8-30g, and for-profit developers to do so for us.

I have attended all the town meetings with the developers. It is apparent that the developers do not care about the town and have refused to adequately address concerns from abutting property owners who want to protect their safety, current lifestyle, and the character of the town. It is abundantly clear that they are putting profit before people.

As an abutter and young homeowner, I am strongly opposed to this proposed project. I have tried to address my concerns and ask thoughtful questions to our town leadership who have not adequately communicated with residents. As a 32-year resident of Chester, I am disappointed that my voice and the opinion of many town residents is not being supported by our town’s leadership.

I encourage all Chester residents to research the developer, state law 8-30g, and this proposal. Please support your neighbors as this situation could happen in your neighborhood too under state law 8-30g.
