Lend Your Support

We would like to add our support for pickleball courts to be built in Clinton, as addressed by a letter in a recent Harbor News (“Appropriate the Funds”, April 27). The writer echoed our sentiments on the many positives related to outdoor healthy fun. As very senior citizens, my husband and I learned to play at the Valley Shore YMCA six years ago and have been searching for play time in every shoreline town from Branford to Groton, with none available in Clinton, where we live.

Programs with organized play are often filled with that town’s residents.

With Westbrook as an example, the revenue that is generated by modest fees, approximately $30 to $40 for eight weeks of organized play, is significant, with seven 2½ hour sessions per week filled to capacity, with 30 players in each session. There are three eight-week sessions from spring through fall. The success of this program is due in large measure to Kevin and Anne McCarthy, who have worked with the town to have three courts built, organized lessons, and arranged recreational and open play. They are generously willing to help Clinton residents get going with our own courts.

Please lend your written and verbal support to our town officials. Better yet, grab a paddle or come borrow one and join us at open play. We have yet to meet anyone who hasn’t enjoyed this really fun sport!
