Not for Monetary Gains

In the ’90s, when I was working for our old bookstore Good Old Books, I came across a hard-covered green book, which contained our early settlers’ covenant for our small town with the latitude 41.2890 and longitude 72.6818.

In this covenant, I read how we promised to be vigilant with our defense. To care for one another with respect and needs; for example, to care for the salt marshes, the salt hay, and the wildlife. And not throw our buildings’ shadows on our neighbors’ property, etc. All common sense At last and not least to proper —

But not for monetary gains.

All so well put in stone by our past First Selectman Carl Ballestracci and placed in the triangle next to the Old Whitfield House on Whitfield Street.
