Together Against Antisemitism and Hate

During my adolescence, I was the target of various antisemitic acts. Those experiences sharpened my ability to see this form of hate even when it resides just under the surface. I am still unsure of the best action to take when I see it. Should I ignore small slights? Should I confront the situation head-on? Or is there some other way to reach a positive outcome? I imagine my ancestors, encountering growing hatred leading up to the Holocaust, faced a similar dilemma. It was too late when they realized they had to act.

Today, I am writing because antisemitism, bigotry, and hate are spreading in our country, our state, and our towns. The perpetrators seek to marginalize large numbers of good people through demeaning prejudice. They erode American society and tear at our shared humanity. Now is the time to stand up, shoulder to shoulder in our community, to resist hatred of all kinds.

Temple Beth Tikvah in Madison is hosting “Together Against Antisemitism and Hate,” a community event in solidarity with interfaith and civic leaders. The regional director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) will help us explore the current state of antisemitism and hate. Two speakers will share short testimonials on experiencing antisemitism. And at their tables, participants will discuss situations in which they saw an injustice and how they reacted. Please join us! “Together Against Antisemitism and Hate” is on Sunday, Jan. 29, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the Guilford Community Center. Entry is free.
